12.03.09 – NRHA FUTURITY FINALS DRAW NEAR

Oklahoma City, OK – December 2, 2009 – The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship (NAAC) Show rolled on today in Oklahoma City. As competitors battled it out in the second go of the $190,000 added NRHA Open Futurity and in the $120,000 added NRHA Non Pro Futurity, the leader board continued to take shape.

The 23 Partnership’s Kaystein and Andrea Fappani continue to ride a three-day streak ending the second go leading the Level 4 Open division, as well as the composite with a 448. Shawn Flarida and Gunnatrashya, owned by Arcese Quarter Horses USA of Weatherford, Texas, remain in the second place position in the composite with a 446.5. Flarida turned the heat up today with two more mounts, Whizkey N Diamonds and Wimpys Show Stopper, scoring a 223 and a 222 respectively. Wimpys Show Stopper is just a half point behind his stable mate Gunnatrashya in the composite with a 221.5.

Marco Ricotta and Day Creek Ranch LLC’s Smoking Sundown ended the go on top in the Level 3 Intermediate Open division with a composite of 442.5. A Shiner Named Sioux, owned by Carol Rose, and Jay McLaughlin rode into the third section and scored a 222 to take the high score of the day and the second go in the Level 3 Intermediate Open, Level 2 Limited Open and Level 1 Open divisions.

With a 441.5 composite score in the Level 2 Limited Open division, Janiene Borror’s Hick A Shine and Mike Boyle took the top honors. Adam Hendrickson and Oakies Red Berry shared a 440.5 lead in the composite in Level 1 Limited Open with A Shiner Named Sioux and McLaughlin.

The Non Pro Consolation round offered another opportunity for nearly 40 exhibitors to qualify for Friday’s Non Pro finals. Earning the high score of 215.5 to claim his spot in Friday’s finals was Lance Griffin riding his Strawberry Tag. Nearly 20 non pro riders advanced to the finals according to the conditions of the Non Pro Consolation round.

Each year, NRHA recognizes the highest scoring first time exhibitor in the Non Pro go round with a championship buckle. In addition, the Non Pro rider’s trainer receives a check for $5,000. This year’s winner is Non Pro rider Jana Simons and NRHA Professional Shelli Ries. Simons rode A Gal With A Gun to an impressive score of 216.5.

In the NAAC Intermediate Non Pro class, Julie Boer of the Northwest region and her horse Taris Little Lilly won the class, while the Northeast region’s Jessica Cornwell and Pamelas Lil Gun took reserve. The Northwest region’s Debi Murnan and Ruf Cut Pine and the South Central region’s Jordan Donnelly and Chexable tied for first in the NAAC Non Pro class. Shelly Martinez of the Northwest region piloted Starbucks Dream Girl to a championship in Prime Time Non Pro and Kathy Copus from the Southwest and Gunball Machine pinned reserve.
